26. Club Midi

Address: Cluj, Romania Capacity: 800 Web: clubmidi.ro

The second largest city in Romania, Cluj is also one of the country’s most important in terms of culture, business, industry and academia, but it’s still best known outside the country for giving the world the Cheeky Girls. Fortunately, the amount of talent to have passed through the doors of Club Midi, whose main room sports crisp Funktion One sound, more than makes up for this. With Booka Shade, Sasha, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin and Luciano often playing marathon sets of up to seven hours, alongside domestic techno talent like Raresh and Rhadoo whose continuing rise in stature matches the growth of dance music in Romania, the club’s booking policy is second-to-none. In the words of Steve Lawler: "this is the perfect club. Amazing room, amazing sound, amazing light and run by people that live it and breathe it, and with undoubtedly the best crowd in the world. The Romanians know how to party!"

* Clujul se prezintă bine și punctează cu încă un club pe locul 36

36. Obsession The Club

Address: Cluj Napoca, Romania Capacity: 1800 Web: obsessionclub.ro

Most people associate pointy teeth and wooden stakes with Transylvania, not cutting-edge club culture. But Romania’s second city Cluj Napoca hides a not-so-secret portal with a mysterious pulling power more magnetic than even that of ol’ Vlad Dracul himself.
More of a multi-purpose venue than a strictly dance music space, bizarre bookings for male strip act The Chippendales notwithstanding, Obsession has brought megastars like Tiësto to Northwestern Romania, and attracts more credible and cool names like James Zabiela and Hernan Cattaneo. It’s a vital electronic music lifeline for Romanian dance fans not based in the capital Bucharest.

* Bucureștiul vine și el din urmă și pe locul 77 se situează Studio Martin, club mic, dar care găzduiește evenimente de succes. Am fost și eu prezent când au venit cei de la dOP

77. Studio Martin

Address: Bucharest, Romania Capacity: 1000 Web: studiomartin.ro

Approaching two decades of dance, Studio Martin has forged a blazing trail in Romanian clubbing, bringing legends such as Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills to the country for the first time to help open up ears and minds. The inspiration behind James Lavelle’s 2002 ‘Global Underground Romania’, a mix of breaks, progressive house and tech, the club continues to push the freshest music and most contemporary labels, recent guests including Art Department, Maceo Plex, Laura Jones, Mirko Loco, dOP and Maayam Nidam to help it shoot back up the poll ahead of local rivals Kristal.

94. Kristal Glam Club

Address: Bucharest, Romania Capacity: 1000 Web: clubkristal.ro

Having worked its way into the affections of Romania’s affluent raving classes through establishing a watertight music policy centred around only the biggest (but credible) names on the house and techno circuit, Kristal Glam Club is a beacon of joy for clubbers of Central Europe who favour more professional modes of partying over the tattiness of many illegal warehouse venues.
Jet-black leather couches fit for Alan Sugar’s board room, 17 silver-framed plasma screens lining the walls and a centre-piece chandelier big enough to make Mary Antoinette blush, the most impressive feature of this club is the breadth of talent taking to the decks each week – James Zabiela, Nic Fanciulli and Dennis Ferrer have all featured throughout the past 12 months.
